Swainsonpea

Description:
SWAINSONPEA - Sphaerophysa
salsula (Pall.) DC.
Fabaceae - (Pea family)
Swainsonpea is a creeping
perennial reproducing by seeds and lateral roots. Leaves are
compound, composed of numerous opposite leaflets which are oval and
covered with hair. Flowers occur from May to July, are 1/4 to 1 inch
in length and are orange-red. Many seeds are formed in bladder-like
translucent pods. Seeds are green with an attachment indentation.
This plant was introduced from
Asia and is commonly found in some western states along roadsides
and fences. It is a potential threat to alfalfa seed producing
areas; the seed is a contaminant in alfalfa seed which is the same
size, shape and weight, making it impossible to separate.
